At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.
The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, invites applications for a postdoctoral position at the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.
The Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry provides world leading translational research spanning cell and animal models to clinical studies and extensive epidemiological studies. Here, ground breaking research in areas such as bipolar disorder, addiction medicine, aging, neurochemistry and psychiatry are conducted.
Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine is a newly established centre at the University of Gothenburg which supports molecular and translational medicine and is an effort to strengthen the life sciences in western Sweden. In combination with the newly opened Imaging and Intervention Centre at the Sahlgrenska Hospital, there will be excellent resources for advanced projects in medical imaging.
Subject area description
At Alzheimer’s disease (AD) occurs aggregation of beta-amyloid peptide into extracellular plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau protein into intracellular neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. It is still unclear when, how and where in the brain the AD pathology occurs. Therefore, new positron emission tomography (PET) trace elements are required that enable an early diagnosis and safe prognosis of AD complementary to biomarkers measured, for example, in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or blood.
Participating in and managing projects within high resolution chemical imaging of brain tissues to investigate PET ligand binding in relation to pathological mechanisms behind AD within evaluation and validation of new PET ligands as well as writing scientific articles, presenting research results at international scientific congresses and apply for research funding. Analysis methods include primarily immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, and high resolution imaging mass spectrometry.
To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject related to the project such as e.g. biochemistry, pharmaceutical bioscience, neuroscience, analytical chemistry, biophysics. Since postdoctoral researcher constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.
We are looking for a positive, driven and independent postdoctoral fellow with solid experience in research and laboratory work as well as experience of molecular / chemical imaging for tissue analysis with immunohistochemistry, autoradiography or electron microscopy, with particular focus on neuroscience or drug development.
When assessing the applicants’ qualifications, great importance will be attached to research experience focusing on method development and knowledge regarding tissue analysis with fluorescent microscopy tools, autoradiography and transmission electron microscopy.
This should be documented through publications in international scientific journals with peer-review systems. Knowledge and experience of PET ligand development, radiochemistry or electron microscopy of tissue samples is a particular advantage. The candidate must demonstrate very good knowledge in English (speech and writing). Furthermore, good ability to independently process data and write scientific publications is a prerequisite as well as being otherwise flexible and able to work both in groups and independently. Great importance will be attached to personal suitability.
The employment is limited (temporary) for 24 months, full time and is placed at The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date; as soon as possible or as agreed.
